Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a measure of the beat-to-beat changes in heart rate.
Taking your pulse gives an average heart rate across these beat-to-beat changes. HRV is a reflection of the synergistic action of the two branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The pattern of HRV is either regular (coherent) indicating a balanced ANS or erratic (incoherent) indicating an out-of-balance ANS. Negative emotions and thoughts create an Incoherent HRV pattern and impair brain function. In contrast - positive emotions and thoughts create a Coherent HRV pattern, reflecting a balanced state of the ANS and physical body state.
